The UKSG theme for Monday evening was Around the World, but Karina and I had been invited by the Emerald Publishing Group to celebrate the launch of the Emerald Backfiles on a yacht in Torquay harbour. About 40 delegates met at the harbour to be led along wooden pathways to the Grand Lady. Unfortunately as there were so many of us the yacht didn’t sail but we enjoyed a champagne welcome, buffet, and a lovely cake with thankfully little pressure to show interest in the purchase of the Backfiles. After a few drinks we carefully made our way back to land and the conference venue in time for the legendary UKSG quiz. Joining a team of other academic librarians and a couple of subscription agents we did rather badly coming about 36 out of 39 teams. The disco followed, though Karina commented that it was a little strange to continue to have the screen of conference sponsors showing above the dance floor. Yes, our dancing was sponsored by Elsevier and others.
