Tuesday 8th April - Afternoon sessions

Large scale digitisation was the theme of the plenary sessions on Tuesday afternoon - Dan Jones discussed the digitisation projects at the National Archives at Kew, including the 1911 census which is hoped to be available online in 2009. Jean Sykes gave an overview of the £22 million JISC digitisation projects, including the UK theses project by the British Library which Hull has sent a number of theses to for digitisation. Both speakers felt that large scale digitisation was the best way to preserve historical documents, images and sounds making them accessible for a much wider audience than previously may have used them. Unfortunately without huge amounts of funding we can only scratch the surface of what could be preserved.
